Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Peekskill public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Downtown Intersection Improvements and Division/Central Reopening
The Main Street intersections at Nelson, North Division, and Bank are getting rebuilt with better crosswalks, signals, and streetscaping. Expect construction in spring–summer 2027 with some temporary lane and street closures, but half the cost is reimbursed by the state.
2026 Street Resurfacing Program
The city is getting an early jump on its annual paving program across a dozen-plus streets, from Academy to Lower Washington, with flexibility to add streets and coordinate with Con Edison projects.
Crosswalk striping and pedestrian safety
Crosswalks around town — including in front of City Hall — remain unstriped with school starting soon. Councilman Fassett wants DPW to move faster or find another way to get it done.
Downtown parking meter confusion
Broken meters are piling up on downtown streets with no signs telling drivers to use an app — even the mayor didn't know the rule. New kiosks arrive soon, but councilmembers want interim signage now.
Four downtown capital projects (~$11 million)
The Civic Hub is 20% done and reopening July 31; safer intersections, garage repairs, and Riverfront Green Park resiliency work are all funded by grants and moving through design or bidding.
